Hi. My name is Brandon Tirrell and I’m seeking control. Control of my earning, control of my time, and control of my life. I started this blog to chronicle my quest for that control.
I’ve known for a long time that I wanted to be an entrepreneur. However, I could never seem to think of what kind of company I wanted to start. I was attracted to the idea of developing a new product and creating a company to sell it, but still, what kind of product?
This past summer, I attended a series of workshops on going in to business, hoping something I learned there would help me answer that question. Instead, I was struck by the intentions of my classmates. While all of them seemed driven and hard-working, most were starting companies based on experience they gained in previous jobs. Former IT professionals wanted to start consulting, former construction workers wanted to become independent contractors, etc. I felt that I was the only person there who was not planning to base an entrepreneurial career on prior job experience. Not only that, but I didn’t care.
I wanted to start my own company precisely because it meant that I didn’t have to limit myself to prior experience. Ideally, my success would hinge solely on the validity of my ideas and the hard work I applied to them. What I was really seeking was the freedom that entrepreneurship seemed to offer, the control over my own life and career.
Aside from my determination, I’m really not prepared for this. I went to college and I’ve had a couple of jobs since then, but no practice running a company. Can I do it? Who knows. Keep checking back to find out.
